Syria is a shattered country, with its population scattered. Fortunately, a great deal is being done by nations and charities around the world to help those in the refugee camps. We chose to help those beyond the refugee camps who are almost invisible to the outside world. In particular, we want to help the children of one of the most persecuted minorities in the Middle East: the Christians. Thousands of Christian children have been displaced; those children who came from all over Syria to Lattakia were scared, they had lost hope and they saw no future for themselves.
In 2015, we decided to invite 200 of them to a special three-day summer school, called "Little Heroes", to plant the seeds of love, trust, hope and joy in their hearts so that they could overcome all they have faced and play an active role in their new homes, schools and communities. The results were astonishing! Our Little Heroes programme inspired the children through group activities, celebrations, Bible Study and prayer. Those six days proved to be a real blessing. Over the course of the programme, the children talked, perhaps for the first time, about their sense of loss - of home, of family members, their school friends, even toys and other possessions. They started to trust again, to smile and laugh, and to make new friends.
This year, our plans are even more ambitious, and the situation in Syria even more desperate.
In 2016, we want to invite 1,100 displaced children to become Little Heroes across Syria - in Lattakia, in Safita and As-Suwayda. But we need the resources to do this. The total cost for this programme is £35,000. That sounds like a lot, but it equals just £35 per child. We need the money to bring the children together, to feed them and to provide them with the materials they'll need for each three-day Summer School.
